Invisalign - everything you need to know

  • How does Invisalign work?

Invisalign uses a series of removable aligners to straighten teeth. When worn over the teeth, each aligner uses gentle pressure to make slight adjustments to the tooth position. Each set of aligners is swapped out every 1-2 weeks (as directed by your dentist) and replaced with the next in the series to gradually move you closer to your new smile.

  • What are the benefits of Invisalign?

The obvious benefit of Invisalign aligners is that they are almost invisible so most people won’t see that you’re wearing them. They’re an ideal choice for anyone looking for discreet teeth straightening here in Crouch End.

Invisalign aligners fit seamlessly into your life. And, because there are no metal wires or brackets, they provide greater comfort and eliminate the need for regular dental visits for adjustments.

Finally, because each clear aligner is designed to be removed when eating, you can eat the foods you love without restriction. In other words, Invisalign treatment ensures you remain firmly in control.

  • How long does Invisalign treatment take?

Treatment time varies from patient to patient and depends on several factors including the complexity of your dental issues and how often you are wearing your aligners.

Remember, Invisalign will only work when being worn! For the best results, each aligner needs to be worn at least 22 hours a day.

Book a consultation with our orthodontist to get an idea of how long your treatment should take. Typically you should allow 12 and 18 months to achieve a healthier, straighter smile but minor corrections can sometimes be fixed in as little as 6 months.

  • Does Invisalign treatment hurt?

Just like conventional fixed braces, Invisalign can cause slight discomfort as your teeth move into a better position. This is a good sign because it shows that your aligners are actually working.

The first week of treatment is when most patients experience some degree of discomfort as the aligner can feel tight on your teeth. Usually, any discomfort can be eased with over-the-counter painkillers such as Ibuprofen and will usually subside within a few days.

Patients also tell us they feel discomfort when switching aligners but again, this is completely normal. As a top tip, it’s worth considering changing them just before going to bed so you can sleep off some of the discomfort.

The more you wear your aligners, the less painful your teeth and jaws will be. Even though you may experience some slight discomfort, it will all be worth it when you achieve your dream Invisalign smile.

  • Will my clear aligners stain?

The appeal of clear aligners is that they remain discreet, even to other people. However you may want to avoid anything that might stain them.

Aligners will stain over time without proper maintenance. Should they become stained, they will be visible in your mouth and naturally, this defeats their purpose.

We also recommend not smoking during Invisalign treatment as nicotine from cigarette smoke can also leave a noticeable yellowing of the aligner. Failure to remove aligners when eating and drinking may also cause sufficient staining.

    The key takeaway…

Look after your aligners and they will look after you!

Because everyone deserves to smile – we have other orthodontic options too!

Invisalign won’t be for everyone, so it’s good to know there are a variety of other teeth straightening options available at Crouch Hall Dental Care.

Traditional fixed metal braces, for example, remain a popular option for teeth straightening and can treat many dental issues, from minor to complex. And, because the colour of the bands can be customised, young adolescents often wear them with pride. Adults may prefer fixed ceramic braces which are more discreet thanks to the use of tooth-coloured brackets and wires.

Smile good, look good with lingual braces

If none of the above floats your boat and you’d prefer to keep your orthodontic treatment a true secret, then we’ve got just the solution for you with lingual braces.

Fitted behind the teeth, lingual braces allow you to smile with confidence throughout your treatment. No one will ever need to know.
